The dental check-up procedure: what to expect and why is it important?

dental check-up

The dental check-up (dental examination) is the first thing a dentist needs to do to identify any potential or existing problems with your oral health. There’s no pain involved in a dental check-up; using their knowledge and experience, the dentist will gently examine your teeth and gums and note down everything on a dental chart.

If the dentist discovers softened enamel (the initial stage of caries), they may need to take some X-rays to determine how big the infection is. An X-ray may also be necessary for teeth that already have fillings if the dentist suspects that caries is developing beneath the filling.

You will not experience any pain during the dental check-up; the biggest inconvenience is holding your mouth open, and even this isn’t going to be worrisome – the examination doesn’t take long.

If you have any concerns or feel anxious, do talk to the dentist. Our team is trained to provide specialised service to nervous dental patients, and we operate under a strict “no judgement” policy. Our only aim is to help you on your journey to a beautiful, healthy smile.

Scale & Polish: the first step to good dental hygiene

Dental hygiene, teeth cleaning

Dental hygiene is the first step to a healthy smile. Although having a healthy diet and not opening beer bottles with your teeth will certainly help, nothing else will have quite the impact on your oral health as regular hygiene sessions.

When you brush your teeth at home, the bristles of your toothbrush can help remove the plaque around the visible part of your tooth. Unfortunately, however, plaque builds up below the gum line, and bacteria will often shape a “bed” around the root of your gum, slowly developing an infection. This process is most commonly the cause of bad breath and pretty much every gum infection from gingivitis to irreversible periodontitis.

Scale and polish is the basic version of dental hygiene and is recommended every six months. If you’re experiencing any gum problems, the treatment can be done as often as every three months.

During the entirely painless procedure, the dental hygienist or dentist cleans the surface of your teeth, reaching below the gum line and removes all plaque and calculus buildup. Once the bacteria between the gums and the teeth are removed, the gum begins restoring their natural position tightly around the tooth, protecting the roots and securing your oral and general health.

AirFlow Stain Removal: what is it and what to expect?

As part of our dental check-up and hygiene packages, AirFlow Stain Removal is for those who suffer from persistent tooth staining, and a general hygiene session would be insufficient. The procedure can also be useful for those with mild tooth discolouration.

Using a combination of air, jet water and fine powder particles, the procedure blasts away the plaque and stains from your teeth without harming your enamel. It takes approximately 30 minutes for a complete AirFlow stain removal, and you will feel a mildly sweet taste, resembling toothpaste.

The results of AirFlow can be quite impressive. The treatment will bring back the natural whiteness of your teeth and the feeling of freshness. Repeated once a year, AirFlow can help you maintain a beautiful and healthy smile.

Please bear in mind that AirFlow is not suitable for patients with attached braces, ceramic or composite veneers, as the pressure can damage the glueing agents. If you’d like to receive dental hygiene and have either veneers or braces, consult our friendly receptionists to book the appropriate specialist appointment.
