What is a specialist periodontist?

A specialist periodontist is a dentist, who specialises in treating gum and soft tissue pathology, causing distress, pain or other symptoms.

You will typically require a periodontist if you have had poor oral hygiene for an extended period of time, or if you have a genetic predisposition to gum-related issues. After an initial assessment of your condition and requirements, the periodontist will create a treatment plan to match your requirements and needs and will make recommendations on caring for your teeth at home.

Periodontal treatments rarely require sedation, but it can most certainly be provided for more sensitive or anxious dental patients.

When will you need to be treated by a specialist periodontist?

Gum disease

The bacteria which enters our mouths when we eat or drink often finds its way under the gum where it can reside for years without causing much trouble. Once an inflammation process occurs, however, the infection can cause bleeding, irritation, and recession of the gums – an irreversible process.

You will typically be referred to a specialist periodontist by your dentist if a problem is detected during your regular dental check-ups. Nevertheless, if you haven’t visited your dentist in a while and identify one of the above-mentioned problems, you do not need to wait. Sadly, once your gums become irritated, it is highly unlikely that they will heal without external intervention.

After the assessment, the specialist periodontist will identify a course of treatment which will require regular visits; most commonly four or six consecutive appointments with a month or two in between. During these appointments, deep cleaning of your teeth will be carried out with specialised tools, allowing the doctor to reach far under the gum line and remove all causes of inflammation.

Available treatments

Gingivitis treatment

Although gingivitis is not considered a severe gum issue, it is a signal that your gums are developing pockets and storing bacteria from food, drink, and even pollution. Early treatment of gingivitis by a specialist periodontist can help save you great discomfort.

Periodontitis treatment

Periodontitis is a sign of critical gum irritation and is also the first sign of receding gums, which is why it cannot be ignored. Failing to treat your periodontitis will result in the quick development of multiple caries, gum recession, tooth and even bone loss.

Receding gums

If a part of the teeth’s root has become exposed, then you are suffering from receding gums – a sign that bacteria is collected under the gum line, causing infection. Although the process cannot be reversed, it can be stopped, and further recession can be prevented.

What to expect?

Assessment

During your assessment, the periodontist will create a full oral picture of the “pockets” created around your gum. The process is painless and helps the specialist identify the severity of the issue and propose a course of action.

1st Treatment Appointment

On your first treatment appointment, the specialist orthodontist will begin thoroughly cleaning the roots of the teeth, using specialised ultrasonic tools which allow access below the gum line. The removal of bacteria allows the gums to heal from the infection and close more solidly around the roots of the teeth.

Follow-up Appointments

Depending on the severity of the issue, several follow-up appointments will be assigned, until the gums are completely healed. Each appointment will be identical to the first one, with the discomfort gradually fading over time as the gums improve.

Post-treatment Care

If you have needed the assistance of a specialist periodontist, this will mean that your gums have become more prone to allowing bacteria to enter. To prevent any future issues it is essential that your oral hygiene is impeccable and that you visit a professional dental hygienist every four or six months following the end of your treatment.
