What is a specialist orthodontist?

Invisalign Lite braces Central London

A specialist orthodontist is a dentist who has undertaking years of additional training and specialises in everything related to teeth straightening. As part of the orthodontist’s career path, they are expected to continue their specialisation and participate in study groups, attend specialised workshops and conferences, and continuously expand their knowledge.

Throughout their education and career, orthodontists gain extensive knowledge not only in aligning teeth for cosmetic reasons but in correcting a patient bite or straightening the teeth to match the person’s facial bone structure and features. Although in recent years innovative braces have made it possible for dentists without specialisation to provide orthodontic treatment, we strongly urge you to only entrust your health in the hands of experienced and knowledgable professionals.

What can a specialist orthodontist do for you?

Invisalign Express braces quick treatment London

A specialist orthodontist is a dental professional you need to see when you require teeth straightening, bite correction or even a review of a TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder). After a full assessment of your condition, the orthodontist can suggest a range of possible solutions and explain what each one entails and what are the projected results.

With modern technology, we have enabled our orthodontist to carry out remote appointments, enabling our patients to embark on their treatment journey with more confidence and without compromising their travelling plans.

A vast range of available treatments including behind-the-teeth lingual braces, invisible aligners, self-ligating braces, and the more traditional ceramic and metal braces are available to our patients and can accommodate every lifestyle and budget demands.

Where supplementary treatments may be requested by our orthodontist (a filling, dental hygiene, or else), our receptionists and treatment coordinators can help you book those additional appointments with one of our highly-skilled dentists.

Available treatments

Lingual Braces

Discretely attached to the back of your teeth, the lingual braces are a fantastic alternative for those who cannot afford to have their orthodontic treatment visible.

Invisible Aligners

The world-famous Invisalign treatment is a cost-effective alternative to lingual braces – virtually invisible the aligners gradually move the teeth in the desired direction over a period of time.

Self-ligating braces

Available with clear or metal attachments, self-ligating braces are typically the tool of choice for more complex orthodontic cases.

Ceramic Braces

An alternative to traditional metal braces, the ceramic brace comes with clear attachments, so the only visible element is the thin metal wire.

Metal Braces

Used for years by orthodontists around the world, metal braces are a classical choice in orthodontic treatments.

Retainers

Bonded (behind the teeth wire) or removable retainers are a must after every orthodontic treatment.

What to expect?

Assessment

During your first appointment (consultation) the specialist orthodontist will carry out a comprehensive assessment which will allow us to provide you with treatment options recommendations. With a vast range of braces available, your orthodontist will discuss with you the potential results with each different solution, and our treatment coordinators will assist you in selecting the most suitable payment option.

1st Treatment Appointment

A professional hygiene session is required before you can have any brace fitted. It is essential that for the duration of your treatment, we ensure not only that your teeth become aligned, but that they also remain healthy. On your first treatment appointment, your brace will be fitted, and your orthodontist will provide with recommendations on carrying for your teeth throughout the treatment.

Follow-up Appointments

Orthodontic treatments typically last between 15 and 24 months (with exceptions for mild cases), and require appointments every 4 or 6 weeks. If your case is suitable for remote check-ups, your specialist may be able to follow your treatment from a distance, and thus fewer visits to the clinic will be required. Please note that regular appointments with your dentist are essential throughout the treatment, as cleaning your teeth becomes more challenging with braces and caries is more likely to develop.

Post-treatment Care

When your treatment is complete, your orthodontist will fit your retainers based on your requirements. We always recommend a combination of both fixed and removable retainers for the first two years post-treatment, with the removable being less worn after that. Teeth whitening is a commonly selected treatment shortly after the braces are removed and our treatment coordinators will be happy to assist you.
