Snapped-off braces wire

Brace wire snap off

One of the most common orthodontic emergencies is a snapped off orthodontic wire – the wire which passes through all attachments and helps align the teeth. The snapped end will poke the soft tissue (cheeks, gums, tongue) and may even cause bleeding. The most serious issue, however, is that once there’s no tension to hold the teeth in the desired position, they can relapse in a matter of hours, erasing months of work completed by your orthodontist.

What to do if your brace wire snaps off?

The first and most important thing is to try and avoid damage to the soft tissue inside the mouth. Try and bend the wire yourself so you can avoid poking. If possible, visit a pharmacy for dental wax and apply it at the end of the wire.

The next most important step is to book an emergency appointment. If your orthodontist is not available, one of our dentists or specialists can assist you and secure the wire. Give our friendly receptionists a call at 020 8748 9365.

Debonded brace bracket

While a debonded brace bracket will not cause the same unpleasant experience which a snapped off wire can cause, it will most certainly be. a factor in the overall treatment duration time.

In our practice, we have seen months and sometimes years worth of movement of a specific tooth, to be completely lost in less than 24 hours after a brace bracket debonds.

What to do if you have a debonded bracket?

First and foremost, make sure that you don’t lose the brace bracket. In some cases, the attachment may hold on to the wire very loosely and can easily fall off. Dental wax can be purchased from nearly any pharmacy and will help you attach the bracket more securely to the wire.

Avoid eating and drinking to the best of your abilities if you cannot secure the bracket well.

And lastly, book an emergency appointment with your orthodontist, or give our friendly receptionists a call at 020 8748 9365.
