When is tooth extraction needed?

When is tooth extraction needed

When a tooth has been severely infected, and no treatment can bring improvement, an extraction is recommended to eliminate the infection and help preserve good overall oral health.

If you have had, for example, a few root canal treatments on the same tooth but keep developing dental abscesses, then an extraction will be the best alternative. The unsuccessful root canal treatments, in this case, are likely a sign of a problem, which dental instruments cannot reach.

Tooth extraction can also be recommended from an orthodontist, where overcrowding is the issue which doesn’t allow for the proper teeth alignment. In this case, the orthodontist will explain which tooth/teeth they recommend extracted and why.

Simple tooth extraction

Simple tooth extraction

Tooth extraction is considered simple when the dentist will not need to make an incision on the gums or break the tooth to extract it.

The regular extraction procedure is rather mild experience, and patients typically feel almost nothing at all. Before the extraction, the dentist carries out a thorough assessment of the tooth, including X-rays, needed to review the root. After we discuss the procedure with you in detail, inform you of all associated costs and obtain your consent, the dentist will administer topical sedation to ensure no sensitivity. When the place is numb, the dentist will gently push the tooth to release it from the bone and then extract it.

Cost: from £180 to £450*

* Depending on the complexity of the extraction. The total cost of the procedure is provided during the initial consultation.

Complex / Surgical tooth extraction

Complex tooth removal

When the tooth extraction is more complex (typically wisdom and back teeth), the procedure is considered difficult, and a surgical approach may be necessary. In this case, your appointment will be booked with an oral surgeon.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will first assess the tooth and overall oral health (an X-ray will be required). After the assessment is complete, we will explain the treatment in detail based on your specific needs and prepare a treatment plan, including all costs. Once we have obtained your consent, the oral surgeon will carry out the procedure as per the information you have been given.

Topical sedation is always administered during tooth extraction, and intravenous anaesthesia is available for nervous or anxious dental patients.

Cost: from £450 to £995

* Depending on the complexity of the extraction. The total cost of the procedure is provided during the initial consultation.
